Jordan Valley West Meadows project work continues, as brownfield goes
green
by Mike Penprase Springfield News-Leader (MO) February 23, 2011Creation of the Jordan Valley West Meadows park project is so long- term that no one is speculating on a completion date, but recent work shows that the job is moving along. The project is technically known as a brownfield remediation, work involves more than just digging up tainted soil. The area, donated to the city by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, once was flatland along Jordan Creek, but now the topography literally is erupting. Heavy equipment is being used to create a series of what are called prairie mounds. With Springfield's downtown skyline in the background, a bulldozer is being used to groom the mounds. ...Instead of having to remove soil containing materials associated with industry, park developers can cover the mounds with a layer of clean dirt that will allow them to be used for park activities. ...
