2,000 petitions ask for quicker Superfund cleanup By Goldie Currie LaSalle News Tribune March 2, 2011 About 2,000 petitions have been signed in support of the village of DePue's push for quicker cleanup and removal of hazardous waste in the village, within the federal Superfund site and in the sediments of Lake DePue. According to village president Eric Bryant the petition drive has been going well and the village has been receiving signed petitions from all over the country. ...Editor’s note: The entire former New Jersey Zinc smelter, a 150-yard- long slag heap, a "gypsum stack" north of Route 29, the "south ditch" leading from smelter site to Lake DePue all are part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Superfund site. Village officials contend that the cleanup process needs to be expedited by the IEPA, U.S.. EPA and potentially responsible parties including Exxon-Mobil and CBS and that the cleanup has not been nearly as comprehensive as they believe is necessary. ...
