State wants EPA to do creek cleanup By Thomas J. Prohaska Buffalo News March 6, 2011LOCKPORT — Pleading budgetary woes, the state Department of Environmental Conservation wants to turn the cleanup of the Eighteen Mile Creek corridor over to the federal government. That provoked fears last week that the cleanup of contamination in and around the creek near the abandoned Flintkote plant in Lockport might be significantly delayed. The DEC was planning to do the work in 2012. "It could be locked in a closet someplace for years," said County Legislator John Syracuse, R-Newfane. "The DEC already has the plan to clean it up. . . . We have a great opportunity to clean up a creek." ...
