Plan in place to clean up brownfield By Billie Rae Walker, reporter GateHouse News Service March 4, 2011Palmyra, N.Y. - A meeting with representatives of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation regarding mitigation of a . 89-acre brownfield area where the NYSEG - Palmyra Former Manufactured Gas Plant located on Park Drive in the village was recently attended by Mayor Vicky Daly. Only one resident of Park Drive and the owner of a commercial property across the street attended, although approximately 800 letters notifying residents, officials, and the media had been sent out. The site is one of about 200 former MGP sites across the state. The Palmyra plant was operated by NYSEG’s predecessor companies from 1857 to 1910. On site gas was manufactured by heating coal. Freshly- manufactured gas had to be cooled and its impurities removed before it could be used. A coal tar resulted from these processes, some of which was released to the environment causing the contamination. ...
