Contempt over contamination Globeville neighborhood speaks up over blighted abandoned plant Peter Marcus, Denver Daily News (CO) March 28, 2011An ordinary community meeting Saturday discussing Interstate 70 repairs and budget woes turned into a heated exchange over breast cancer and contamination, as the city prepares to redevelop a 77-acre blighted site in Globeville. Councilwoman Judy Montero fended off questions from an angry bunch of Globeville residents over redevelopment of the blighted former ASARCO smelting plant near east 51st Avenue and Washington Street. Residents are concerned about the lead and arsenic that was left by the former plant, raising concerns over contamination of groundwater and possible connections to breast cancer. ...
