Tannery-to-studio proposal: Prepare to listen, think, then vote Editorial Rockland Herald-Gazette (ME) Aprilo 5, 2011A proposal to develop the former Apollo Tannery lot in Camden into a regional film production center has stirred the locals, and with good reason. The town has stared at the empty lot for more than five years, an expanse of aging asphalt hemmed off by an unsightly chain link fence. It is a small-scale brownfield that a small town spent a lot of money and effort to clean and seal off its environmental degradation. To try to recoup that investment, the town seeks an enterprise that would appeal to the neighborhood of Millville and the town, and create jobs. By any stretch of the imagination, it is a tall order. But an order has been placed: B'D' Turman'D Entertainment, a Maine- registered limited liability company consisting of three out-of-state businessmen, wants to build film production studios on the land and develop a business. The plan involves obtaining 2.8 acres of free land, as advertised by Camden in a nationwide marketing campaign to unload the property, and, in return, create at least 24 jobs, each with an annual salary/benefits package worth $40,000. ...
