County Gets Tough on Giving City Half-Million for Brownfield SiteJim Ley made a handshake deal six years ago to give the city $500,000 for the cleanup of a dump. The agreement is unraveling fast. By Stan Zimmerman Sarasota Patch (FL) July 13, 2011Sarasota County left the window slightly ajar on a city request for a half-million dollars to help clean up the old dump on the southeast corner of Washington Boulevard and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way. While county commissioners didn’t shut the window, the crack the City of Sarasota must climb through to get the money is small. The origin goes back seven years to a verbal agreement between then- County Administrator Jim Ley and then-City Manager Mike McNees. In a handshake deal, Ley promised $500,000 and then quietly moved money from a solid waste fund to the general fund.
