Reclaiming the land Companies team up for new look on field By JIM MEENAN South Bend Tribune (IN) August 1, 2011SOUTH BEND - As you drive by it on Indiana Avenue and Lafayette Boulevard, the large open field with prairie grass, black-eyed Susans, weeds and wildflowers may not seem too significant. It has three new park benches facing it, some short rolling hills you might expect to see on a golf course and a handful of new trees. But like a lot of things, what's beneath the surface of this one-acre plot where a foundry once stood makes it all the more worth a look. Part of the parcel near the new Transpo building is being fertilized with New~Life Super Soil Booster, and the rest could be in the future. The important thing is it's getting results on an old brownfield that on a closer look still has its share of glass, rocks, even iron ore, among other things sitting on once quite contaminated soil. "The goal is to get this to look like a prairie in short order," said Dan Pavich, chief engineering officer for Creative Energy Solutions of Bristol, which produces New~Life Super Soil Boosters, which utilizes Asian carp, turning it into an organic fertilizer. ...
