'We're the living dead:' Upper Ringwood residents want buyouts

Federal environmental experts urged dozens of Upper Ringwood  
residents Tuesday to have their homes and properties tested for  
dioxin and lead, sounding yet another warning of the dangers of  
living on a Superfund site.

The Ford Motor Co. dumped tons of industrial waste and paint sludge,  
castoffs from its former Mahwah factory, once the nation’s largest  
auto manufacturing plant. Paint sludge, which still remains in major  
dumping areas and on a few properties, contains high levels of  
contaminants, including arsenic, lead and volatile organic compounds  
such as benzene.

While government officials tried to explain the benefits of testing,  
some frustrated residents blasted Ford for not buying out properties  
they consider worthless. After years of botched cleanups, many  
residents are skeptical the EPA will get the job done.
