By SARAH WATSON and LEE PROCIDA Press of Atlantic City (NJ) October 15, 2011The state Pinelands Commission proposed new rules Friday that would allow for the placement of solar-generating sites as primary uses in protected Pinelands areas. The move opens up possibilities for municipalities to install solar panels on old landfills, brownfields, and other remediated areas that have sat unused for years or decades. In April, Gov. Chris Christie signed a bill into law - originally sponsored by state Sen. Jim Whelan, D-Atlantic - that permits the new approvals. It gave the commission another six months to change its regulations to match. A large-scale project proposed in Ocean Township, Ocean County, was one of the first such projects proposed, and stakeholders in that plan partly drove the process for the new law. ...
