Power plant bill for cleanup top in state Report lists projects owed tax breaks to clean up polluted land By Brian Nearing Albany Times-Union (NY) February 1, 2012RENSSELAER - The Capital Region's newest natural gas electricity plant tops the list of projects owed more than $192 million in tax breaks from the state, according to a new report on a costly program meant to clean up polluted land. Issued by the state Department of Taxation and Finance, the report showed that 37 projects qualifed for tax credits in 2010 under the state Brownfield Cleanup Program, led by Empire Generating Co., owner of the 635-megawatt plant in the Port of Rensselaer. The company claimed an $86.9 million credit, the largest ever under the four-year-old program meant to encourage cleanups and rebuilding on polluted land. ...
