Eco-industrial park developer near Mount Holly refining its plan

A vision for redeveloping a contaminated industrial site near Mount Holly has become a little more hazy.

Gaston County leaders have looked forward to the economic windfalls they might see from the conversion of a former chemical manufacturing site on the Catawba River. The ReVenture Park project would turn the 667-acre site in northwest Mecklenburg County into an eco-industrial park, which could benefit the surrounding region.

Plans have long been to kick-start the venture with a waste-to-energy facility that would burn trash to create electricity. But that idea has fallen by the wayside, said Tom McKittrick, president of Forsite Development, a commercial real estate firm leading the effort.

"The anchor was going to be the large, waste-to-energy project," he said. "Right now, that seems to be on hold."
