EPA to hold community meeting on Lockwood toxic cleanup

In the 12 years since the Environmental Protection Agency designated  
580 acres in Lockwood a Superfund site because the soil and water was  
contaminated by toxic chemicals, no actual cleanup work has been done.

Two companies are responsible for the contamination. One is Soco West  
Inc., which reached an agreement last fall to clean up its area at an  
estimated cost of $6.9 million. Soco West is the successor of  
Brenntag West Inc. and Dyce Chemical, which operated a chemical  
repacking and distribution plant.

EPA would like to collect soil gas samples around homes this summer,  
then return in the winter for more indoor air testing, Hoogerheide  
said. The sample collection will be voluntary, he added. Winter is  
the best time to test indoor air because homes tend to be closed up  
in the colder weather, he said. Chlorinated solvents are more likely  
to vaporize and come up from the ground water.
