Four Wanaque homes need test for toxic vapor BY JAMES M. O'NEILL The Record (NJ) May 2, 2012New Jersey wants the owner of a Wanaque industrial site to investigate how far a plume of groundwater contaminated with cancer- causing solvents has spread off its First Avenue property. The state Department of Environmental Protection is worried about the potential for the solvents TCE and PCE to vaporize through soil into homes near the facility. It has told the site owner, Haskell Properties LLC, to take sub-slab and basement air samples at four homes on First Avenue. One home tested high for the solvents, and a contractor installed a vapor mitigation system to suck the vapors out from beneath the house. The DEP has asked Haskell Properties to perform more tests to determine how far south the contaminated groundwater has migrated. ...
