SOPA seeking funds for experimental clean-up By RYAN SCOTT OTTNEY Portsmouth Daily Times (OH) May 3, 2012Members of the Southern Ohio Port Authority (SOPA) met in a special meeting Wednesday afternoon to accept a parcel of land and apply for a grant from the Ohio Department of Development to participate in a pilot program to remediate the site. The site is 2.2 acres of land still contaminated from the New Boston Coke Plant and Steel Mill. Members of the SOPA Board voted unanimously to accept the land from the Scioto County Court of Common Pleas with the understanding that the Board is not liable for the contaminates already on the site. After voting to accept the land, the SOPA Board also voted unanimously to apply for a $200,000 grant through the Ohio Department of Development’s Brownfield Restoration Fund. If approved, the Board will use this grant to participate in an experimental pilot program with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to remediate the site. ...
