Environmentalists question DEP's effectiveness Agency claims new efficiencies will clean up toxic sites faster by Bob Makin My Central Jersey June 3, 2012The state Department of Environmental Protection not only has dropped the ball when it comes to fining corporate polluters but also in getting them to remediate toxic waste sites in a timely fashion, several Central Jersey-based environmentalists said. A 2008 report by the Environmental Protection Agency's U.S. Inspector General condemned the DEP's lack of enforcement of regulations regarding its federally granted authorization over Superfund sites. With about 140 Superfund sites, New Jersey has more than any other state in the nation, with a dozen to be added in the next five years. Since the Inspector General report was issued four years ago, the DEP was stripped by the EPA of its oversight of the American Cyanamid Superfund site on the banks of the Raritan River in Bridgewater, said Walter Sodie, director the EPA-funded watchdog group CRISIS. ...
