NJ Town In Fear Over 30 Year Old Toxic Mess By KIRSTIN COLE WPIX (PIX 11) TV News June 11, 2012GARFIELD, New Jersey - For nearly three decades New Jersey's Department of Environmental Protection was in charge of the clean up at EC Electroplating in Garfield, NJ. The state agency cleaned up a mere 30-percent of a three ton toxic spill in 1983 of the chemical chromium, a known carnicogen. After the company folded in 2009, the state turned the toxic mess over to the Environmental Protection Agency. Now the clean up is on a fast track: monitoring wells are being drilled, 13 homeowners' basements have been treated so Chromium won't invade anymore - which negatively impacts home values - and the EPA is working to pull dozens of barrels of toxic chromium out of the basement of the now closed EC Electroplating, but have been hampered by near constant flooding. Other toxic chemicals are presumed to be mixed in as well. ...
