Clayton agrees to buy, remediate contaminated land along Neuse River By Rebecca Putterman News & Observer (NC) May 19, 2012CLAYTON The town wants to buy 40 acres near the Neuse River, but not before the owner, DuPont, cleans up any contamination there. DuPont bought the land at Loop and Covered Bridge roads in 1975 to use as an agricultural research facility. The property adjoins 80 acres that Clayton bought about 18 months ago from the Massey family, including frontage along the Neuse River and a section of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. "The tie-in from a recreation standpoint is obvious, and we also have interest in developing the property as a fire training ground," said Town Manager Steve Biggs. The Town Council voted last week to approve an agreement that outlines conditions for buying the land by Dec. 31. If DuPont also signs on, the town would seek an agreement with the state N.C. Brownfields Program, which would define what needs to be done to make the site suitable for reuse. ...
