Schumer pushes for cleanup of vacant gas stations by Jessica Bakeman Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin (NY) July 19, 2012ALBANY - Sen. Charles Schumer is pushing for the renewal of a federal program that would clean up vacant gas stations and the contaminated land that surrounds them, arguing that they are safety hazards and deter economic development. Schumer, a Democrat from Brooklyn, announced Wednesday he would seek approval in Congress to restart a program that would provide tax incentives for cleaning up brownfields, stretches of land contaminated by fuel or other pollutants. The Brownfields Tax Incentives would allow all environmental clean-up costs at eligible properties to be tax deductible in the year the work was conducted. New York also provides financial perks for cleaning up and developing such wasteland. ...
