Edgewater day-care center close to Superfund site moving to North Bergen BY SCOTT FALLON BERGEN RECORD (NJ) JULY 18, 2012EDGEWATER - A day-care center that has operated next to one of North Jersey's worst toxic sites for more than two decades will move in the next few months to accommodate an increase in enrollment, its director said Tuesday. The Palisades Child Care Center, located just feet away from the Quanta Resources Superfund site, will move to a larger facility in nearby North Bergen. Officials at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have long said there is no health threat to the children at the center despite contamination from Quanta seeping under 115 River Road. Air tests have found no harmful levels of contaminants in the center, although they have been detected in the basement. However, a 2009 report by the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry said children, "such as those attending the Palisades Child Center, may be at risk of potential exposures to contaminants" at the Quanta site. ...
