Middletown, Sayreville to meet Friday over Shadow Lake muck

SAYREVILLE - One town's unwanted lake muck is another town’s …  
unwanted lake muck.

Sayreville and Middletown will meet today about their disagreement  
over whether what’s dredged up from a Middletown's Shadow Lake will  
be used as fill in a Sayreville brownfield. The brownfield is the  
former the National Lead plant site, which is undergoing a massive  
redevelopment.

"They made applications, but it was a long way from being accepted,"  
Sayreville Mayor Kennedy O’Brien said Thursday of Middletown.

But a Middletown official said the township has permits from the  
state Department of Environmental Protection authorizing the move of  
the silt. And, the DEP picked the Sayreville site as a recipient of  
the Middletown’s mud, which contains naturally-occurring arsenic,  
said Township Administrator Anthony Mercantante.
