EPA reports slow progress on Le Roy spill site by Steve Orr Rochester Democrat and Chronicle (NY) August 21, 2012Since public attention was refocused early this year on a 1970 train derailment that contaminated a large tract south of Rochester with toxic solvents, federal officials have made slow progress toward an eventual cleanup. Groundwater underlying about 4 1/2 square miles in Le Roy, Genesee County, Caledonia, Livingston County and Wheatland, Monroe County is tainted with an estimated 35,000 gallons of trichloroethene, or TCE. Steps have been taken to protect residents from exposure to the TCE, but an underground plume of the solvent remains in place. A fresh round of environmental studies has been conducted in recent years, and a new remedial investigation report that will highlight the result of those studies was delivered Tuesday to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. ...
