Havelock seeks additional grant for Phoenix cleanup

Havelock commissioners and staff are continuing to move forward with  
efforts to clean up the old Phoenix Recycling site near Tucker Creek.

One of the chief concerns voiced by Havelock leaders all along has  
been to what degree the city could be liable if it pursued ownership  
of the 34-acre site.

“The Brownfields agreement is what gives you protection from  
liability,” Watson told commissioners during a meeting. “As long as  
you don’t cause another spill or cause another incident, then your  
liability protection stays.
