Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand seeks new brownfield cleanup funds

The news conference over, Dorothy Hall made her way down the stairs  
from the Genesee River waterfront, past the overgrowth and an  
abandoned oil refinery scribbled over with graffiti.

She and her neighbors have met, discussed and planned the remaking of  
this property for three years now. Come next week, they will gather  
again as the city presents the advisory group with master plan  
concepts that designate the warehouses and undeveloped land south of  
Ford Street, on the west bank of the Genesee River, for open space or  
mixed-use/commercial development.

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-NY, visited the site Friday to  
announce legislation proposing a Waterfront Brownfields  
Revitalization Act that would provide grants and other assistance to  
local governments and nonprofits trying to redevelop sites such as  
this. Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-Fairport, who was unable to attend,  
introduced similar legislation in the House in early 2008.
