Planning firms pitch services for $567,000 West Main Street

by Riverhead Local (NY) September 14, 2012Four different planning firms pitched their services to the Riverhead Town Board at Thursday's work session for a chance to win a $567,000 grant-funded contract to develop a proposal for a revitalization and redevelopment plan for the West Main Street corridor along the Peconic River in downtown Riverhead. The funding comes from the state's Brownfields Opportunities Areas program, which targets redevelopment of areas that contain a number of brownfield sites. Brownfield sites are defined by law as those whose redevelopment or reuse may be complicated by the potential presence of hazardous substances, pollution or contamination. Planning firms Nelson, Pope and Voorhis of Melville, Vision Long Island of Northport, AKRF of Manhattan and BFJ Planning, also of Manhattan — all of which responded to an RFP issued by the town — made presentations to the board and members of its recently appointed BOA steering committee, explaining how they would approach the completion of a downtown revitalization study to meet the objectives detailed in the BOA grant awarded by the state ...
