Former East Hampton Factory Site Cleaned Up, Landscaped By ERIK HESSELBERG Hartford Courant (CT) September 29, 2012EAST HAMPTON - In the 1930s and 40s, the Gong Bell factory along Pocotopaug Creek was Santa's workshop, churning out thousands of whimsical toys, like brightly colored circus clowns tapping mechanical drums and little wooden teddy bears pushing chiming wheelbarrows. But the production of these enchanting playthings left an ominous legacy. Lead-based paint was used to decorate many of the toys, leaving tainted soil where bell factory buildings once stood. "The Gong Bell factory property at 103 Main St. is where the paint shop stood, and that's where we found heavy metals like lead," said Scott Bristol, an environmental engineer and the former chairman of the town's brownfield redevelopment agency. "It was a significant risk to the public." ...
