Blighted properties put to varied uses through state Brownfields program By ARIEL WITTENBERG New Bedford Standard-Times (MA) October 7, 2012The old Alden Corrugated cardboard box mill on Church Street IN New Bedford was "a blight on the City" for more than 10 years after it closed in 1991. In 1995, the mill building was destroyed in a fire. It was demolished, but debris remained in the basement. Four underground storage tanks of petroleum remained buried, making the site unattractive to potential buyers. Until, that is, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental protection funded the removal of the tanks in 2003 through its brownfields program and provided liability protection for the site's buyer. Now, the old Alden Corrugated cardboard box mill is home to three 3,000-square foot greenhouses, owned by Sid Wainer & Son Co., a grower of specialty produce. ...
