Brownfield focus yields success Opinion by Jason S. Lichtstein Tallahassee Democrat (FL) October 19, 2012 The momentum is real along Gaines Street.Gaines Street, the All Saints District and the area around Doak Campbell Stadium are alive with new construction projects. The first phase of Gaines Street roadway work is complete, helping to create a more walkable, close-knit neighborhood, and the next phase is under way. Amid the success, significant credit should go to the early local Brownfield initiatives that helped to get the ball rolling and to create critical mass for redevelopment and new investments in the area. Brownfields are idle, vacant or blighted sites marred by contamination concerns. Since the early days of Florida's and the federal Brownfield programs, the city of Tallahassee has been on the forefront, obtaining more than $2 million in federal Brownfield grants and awards since 1997, more than any other city or county in the state. (This week, the city and the Tallahassee Community Redevelopment Agency are holding a kick-off workshop on opportunities under the recently awarded $1 million federal Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund Grant.) ...
