Construction at Arcadia Brewing site in Kalamazoo delayed due to soil
concerns
By Emily Monacelli Kalamazoo Gazette (MI) November 15, 2012KALAMAZOO, MI -- Construction at the future Arcadia Brewing Co. site in Kalamazoo will be delayed, in part due to an unforeseen problem with soil that will not support the weight of the building. The Kalamazoo Brownfield Redevelopment Authority voted Thursday to spend $16,750 to test an unsuitable layer of clay/silt found seven to 10 feet below the surface at 701 E. Michigan Ave. The site requires further drilling and sampling to determine whether the layer of soil is contaminated and to "better delineate the thickness and extent of the unsuitable material," according to a memo to the BRA from city staff. Marc Hatton, the city's development manager, told the board the layer of soil is "unsuitable to support the weight of a new building." "The estimates are (a building built on that layer) could compress and sink by the order of four inches in six months," he said. ...
