State plans to clean up brownfield site on Sconondoa Street in Oneida By Nick Will Oneida Dispatch (NY) February 18, 2013ONEIDA - The local brownfield site at 210 Sconondoa St. that is contaminated with oil is being looked at for Department of Environmental Conservation for remediation. A brownfield site is any location that the state determines would be difficult to reuse or redevelop because of contaminants. Through the Environmental Restoration Program (ERP) municipalities are reimbursed for investigations and clean-ups at sites they own. The site used to be the location of the Oneida Sconondoa Street Apartments and is about quarter-acre in size. The building was vacated in the late 1990âs and the city owns the property in leu of unpaid taxes. The building was being used as a training space for fire and rescue services, but is in such poor condition that itâs no longer used. The cityâs remediation project on the site began in 2001. Several underground fuel storage tanks were removed from the property in 2002. Pockets of petroleum contamination were identified on the property in the soil and groundwater by the DEC in 2004. The contaminant plume extends 5.100 square feet on the property. In 2006, the site was approved for the ERP. ...
