Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] Frustration at Hopewell Precision site, New York |
Hopewell Precision activist worn as money stalls 10-year fight for water by John Ferro Poughkeepsie Journal (NY) May 25, 2013 HOPEWELL JUNCTION - ... May 24 marked the 10-year anniversary of when this fiery Hopewell Junction resident learned a cancer-causing chemical you can’t smell or taste had seeped into the groundwater of the Superfund site she now lives within. The approximately 6-acre site contains about 40 homes whose well water is contaminated with unsafe levels of two industrial chemicals, trichloroethylene (TCE) and trichloroethane (TCA). The chemicals were dumped into the ground at Hopewell Precision, a nearby sheet-metal fabricator after which the site is named. ... Plaques on her living room wall and a scrapbook filled with news clippings pay homage to the miles she has traveled, the speeches she has made and public officials she has browbeaten into submission. But today, there is no rejoicing at 130 Creamery Road. “I used to feel like I was getting something done, like I was making a difference,” she said. “And now I feel like it was a waste.” For the entire article, see http://www.poughkeepsiejournal.com/article/20130525/NEWS04/305250026/VIDEO-Hopewell-Precision-activist-worn-money-stalls-10-year-fight-water -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center 278-A Hope Street Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650-961-8918 or 650-969-1545 Fax: 650-961-8918 LSiegel@cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Brownfields mailing list Brownfields@lists.cpeo.org http://lists.cpeo.org/listinfo.cgi/brownfields-cpeo.org | |
