House oversight chairman wants to review tax credit procedures By JEREMY KOHLER St. Louis Post-Dispatch (MO) June 20, 2013The chairman of a Missouri House government accountability committee has opened an investigation into the state program that subsidizes brownfield redevelopment after a Post-Dispatch story exposing oversight lapses at the taxpayer-funded hazardous waste cleanup and demolition of Northwest Plaza. Rep. Jay Barnes, R-Jefferson City, gave the directors of the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Economic Development a July 18 deadline to turn over records and answer questions about how tax credits worth $7.8 million were awarded to pay for the project. It is the second government inquiry opened into the state’s brownfield remediation tax credits as a result of the newspaper’s reporting. Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich’s office has been reviewing the Department of Natural Resources’ role in brownfield tax credits and plans to begin an audit later this year of the brownfield remediation tax credit program within the Department of Economic Development. ...
