Burgess-Norton contamination investigation continued this summer with
soil and water testing
By Dave Alexander | Muskegon Chronicle (MI) September 10, 2013MUSKEGON, MI - The industrial contamination of the groundwater below the houses and businesses surrounding the former Burgess Norton Manufacturing Co. has left the public spotlight but environmental investigation continued this summer. Burgess-Norton had an industrial plant at 660 Nims St. and it’s expected that the plume of trichloroethene, or TCE, could have resulted from the plant that closed in 2003. With the blessing of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, company officials have hired an environmental consultant to explore the extent and source of the contamination deep in the groundwater in the city’s McLaughlin and Angell neighborhoods. The TCE contamination became a public issue before the Muskegon City Commission and Muskegon County Board of Trustees throughout 2012. The company set up a public information website at nimsreport.com. ...
