Cleanup project to reclaim Ridgeland property City Center planned at former concrete plant by Jimmie E. Gates Jackson Clarion Ledger (MS) September 20, 2013The state is working with federal officials to clean up large contaminated sites in the state with the long-term goal of reclaiming the property for use, but fear of liability keeps most people away from buying or reclaiming such property for redevelopment, officials say. Mississippi has 12 sites on the Environmental Protection Agency’s Superfund list. The Superfund program provides for the cleanup of large contaminated and-or abandoned hazardous waste sites that are a top health threat. Nationally, there are more than 1,600 such sites. Mississippi also has thousands of Brownfield sites, which are abandoned or underused commercial or industrial areas where redevelopment is hindered by possible environmental contamination. A site could be as small as a gas station or dry cleaners or as large as an industrial plant. Some sites have or had abandoned underground gas storage tanks. ...
