New state loans for brownfield cleanups tied to job creation

A state program that has provided millions of dollars to help clean up and redevelop abandoned factories, warehouses and landfills across Ohio is about to get an extreme makeover of its own.

Since 2002, the Clean Ohio Fund has distributed nearly $400 million in grants to help replace derelict factories and mills with businesses and residential development. Columbus officials credit the grants as key factors in their work to revive some of the city’s oldest industrial zones, or brownfields.

Clean Ohio is down to its last $8.5 million, and as the fund dwindles, officials with JobsOhio, Gov. John Kasich’s economic-development agency, are touting a new program that will commit $43 million a year toward similar projects. But instead of grants, the program would primarily provide low-interest loans for projects that show they will create permanent jobs.
