Chicago a model for brownfield lands Windy City has big plans for 500
acres of former U.S. Steel operation
By Joan Walters Hamilton Spectator (ONT) October 31, 2013Just south of Chicago, on 500 acres that jut into Lake Michigan with dazzling downtown views, a small suburban city is planned for a landfill base of slag - property that was once the South Works operation of U.S. Steel. U.S. Steel closed the plant in 1992, leaving a void in the southside of Chicago where South Works was once the largest employer, with 30,000 workers. But the value of the land prompted the American steel giant and developer McCaffery Interests to collaborate on the $4-billion, 30- year project to build 13,000 homes, 17.5-million square feet of retail and commercial space, a high school, a marina and parks. Even though Lakeside, as the project is known, still has years of remediation work to go, it's a high-profile example of the hundreds of brownfield redevelopments under way in the United States, all backed by integrated, well-funded programs to revitalize abandoned industrial sites. ...
