New life for 3 ex-brownfield sites in Newburgh By Leonard Sparks Newburgh Times Herald-Record (NY) December 10, 2013CITY OF NEWBURGH - For decades, Provan Ford's truck repair and tanker- cleaning facility on Mill Street plagued the City of Newburgh with explosions, fires and discharges of potentially flammable products into the sewer system. Then the 3.5-acre site, acquired by the city via tax foreclosure in 1999, became another kind of problem: an unusable wasteland contaminated with carcinogens like benzene. Three years ago, a cleanup effort by the state Department of Environmental Conservation-operated Environmental Restoration Program took a stab at rescuing the site. It appears to have worked. Newburgh expects to complete the sale of Provan and two other former industrial sites to private companies next year. ...
