South Jersey towns turning tainted sites into attractions By DEREK HARPER Press of Atlantic City December 25, 2013Egg Harbor Township cut the ribbon on its new Nature Reserve this fall, marking the rebirth of the former sandpit once described by a judge as "a scar on the landscape." But it"s not the first time the township turned an unappealing industrial property into something people can enjoy. The Nature Reserve is about two miles from McCullough"s Emerald Links, a township-owned golf course that sits atop an 80-year-old landfill. "You have no idea," Mayor James "Sonny" McCullough said of the once- stinky tract. "It was right in the middle of town. People who lived around it couldn"t barbecue. There were seagulls, there were rats, the odor was horrendous. It was just a tremendous eyesore for Egg Harbor Township - not just an eyesore, but a nose-sore." ...
