Clean up this cleanup law Editorial Albany Times-Union (NY January 11, 2014 THE ISSUE:An old program to clean and develop contaminated sites is wasting billions of dollars. THE STAKES:A more focused program would achieve important environmental and economic goals. What started out as a well-intentioned law to encourage the cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated sites in New York state has become an extraordinarily costly program of questionable public value. But it doesn't have to be like this. With the Brownfield Cleanup Program nearing its end in 2015, New York has an opportunity to write a better law that can achieve what the existing one should have - the cleanup and redevelopment of properties that developers and businesses would otherwise shy away from. ...
