DuPont to explore cleanup options
Will test diluting plume of pollution

Nearly 30 years after discovering that toxic chemicals migrated off  
its property and contaminated groundwater beneath 450 homes in  
Pompton Lakes, DuPont is readying two new tests to study possible  
methods to remove the pollution. A previous study of a third cleanup  
option has already produced positive results.

One of DuPont's new tests will determine whether it can dilute or  
flush out the contaminated groundwater plume beneath the residential  
neighborhood in a controversial process called hydraulic surcharging.

The company wants to try that approach because an effort to clean  
groundwater on DuPont's own property, the site of a former munitions  
factory, and then pump it back into the ground has also reduced  
pollution in part of the plume where the cleaned water reenters the  
ground. But some residents are concerned that discharging the cleaned  
water over a broader area underneath the houses would cause the water  
table to rise, leading to flooded in basements.
