Reclaiming the Neck, again; Ashley River waterfront gets a second  
look from MeadWestvaco

A failed plan to reclaim polluted land along the Ashley River and  
build thousands of homes and businesses there is getting a second  
look, with regional development powerhouse MeadWestvaco leading the  
team.

While a building boom has resumed across the tri-county area, roughly  
300 acres of once-industrial riverfront sit vacant in the Neck Area,  
the stretch of land between the Ashley and Cooper rivers where  
Charleston and North Charleston meet.

That unpleasant landscape, one of the first glimpses of Charleston  
for many people as they drive into the city, is seen as an  
opportunity to focus some of the region's growth inward, toward the  
metropolitan area's urban center.

But there's the challenge of making the properties a safe place to  
live and work.
