EPA to sample air for toxic chemicals near CTS site by Clarke Morrison Asheville Citizen-Times (NC) June 21, 2014ASHEVILLE – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency plans to sample the air at six homes this week to determine if they have unsafe levels of toxic fumes from contamination at the former CTS plant.
The move comes after the voluntary evacuation earlier this month of 13 people that the agency said could be at risk from vapors of the industrial solvent trichloroethylene near the Superfund site.
Air samples will be collected Tuesday and Wednesday inside and outside homes just east of the plant and at springs that are heavily contaminated with TCE, said Samantha Urquhart-Foster, remedial project manager with EPA.
