EPA: Testing shows no additional evacuations needed by Clarke Morrison Asheville Citizen-Times (NC) July 4, 2014ASHEVILLE - Preliminary results from testing for toxic vapors at six homes near the former CTS plant show the air is safe and the residents won’t need to be evacuated, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Officials have been concerned about fumes of the industrial solvent trichloroethylene emanating from contaminated springs next to the Superfund site on Mills Gap Road. TCE has been linked to cancer, liver and kidney damage and immune system disorders. Thirteen residents of three households closest to the springs were voluntarily evacuated on June 6 after lab tests found that levels of TCE, a human carcinogen, in the air were above what EPA considers safe to breathe. ...
