Buyer backs out of deal for old school; Brighton looks at charter
by Jim Totten Livingston County Daily Press & Argus (MI) July 10, 2014A deal to sell the vacant Lindbom Elementary School in Brighton to a residential developer has fallen through, but Brighton Area Schools officials are already looking at a backup offer.
Superintendent Greg Gray said he will be meeting next week with representatives from the charter school operation called American Classical Academies. The charter school had offered $1.45 million for the property at 1010 State St., just north of Main Street in Brighton.
...Gray said the company didn't qualify for brownfield funds, which are provided to developers seeking to give new purpose to a contaminated site. He said there was a plume of contaminated water discovered under the school in the 1950s or ’60s, and monitoring wells were installed for regular testing.
