As year starts, district and EPA say Malibu schools are safe BY JOANNA CLAY Los Angeles Register (CA) August 18, 2014After months of investigations into toxic contamination at Malibu public schools, Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District says it's safe for students and staff to return to school today. The federal government backs the assertion.But teachers might observe some empty chairs. Malibu parents - at least 25 - didn’t want their children to return to Malibu schools this year due to PCBs found in five classrooms at Malibu High, a Malibu Unites survey said. PCBs - polychlorinated biphenyls - were used in caulk from the 1950s until the federal government banned them in 1979. The chemical can cause cancer and affect the immune system, nervous system, reproduction and the endocrine system, among others. ...
