Trace amounts of gas found at Varieur; no reason to close Valley Breeze (RI) August 26, 2014PAWTUCKET - Officials from the Pawtucket School Department and the city of Pawtucket announced Tuesday that a series of tests for the gas trichloroethene (TCE) at Varieur Elementary School have demonstrated that TCE is not present in the school's air and that the school would not need to close. School officials engaged Rhode Island Analytic Laboratories to perform indoor air quality testing after the completion of exterior soil gas testing by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management found trace amounts of the gas outside Varieur School, according to a news release. The indoor air quality test results, received at 5:18 p.m. Monday, came back negative for TCE. The indoor air quality testing did indicate the presence of low concentrations of tetrachloroethene (PCE), a chemical common in many cleaning products. But DEM representatives said that elevated levels of the gas were not detected when recent soil gas tests were conducted around the perimeter of the school. ...
