Study: Abandon contaminated middle school

WESTPORT - The findings of a comprehensive study on the future of the PCB-contaminated Westport Middle School concluded what the School Committee’s position has been since last winter: the middle school should be abandoned in favor of a three-school district.

Last February, the School Committee made clear its intentions to eventually close the middle school during a discussion about grade realignments that moved fifth graders to the elementary school. 

More recently, the same body tasked the administration’s new business manager, Praveen Singhal, with conducting a feasibility study on moving the three remaining grades, sixth through eighth, elsewhere. Singhal shared the findings at the committee's meeting last week.

According to Singhal, the study took another look at the four basic options for the plagued school: status quo, remediation, regionalization or expansion.
