Expert: Workers need details on Huron TCE vapors
Employees at the Huron campus need to be informed about TCE vapors in buildings so they can make their own decisions about exposure risks

ENDICOTT – Employees at the Huron campus, especially women of child-bearing age, need to be informed about TCE vapors in buildings so they can make their own decisions about exposure risks, a national advocate told a community group Thursday.

Lenny Siegel, executive director of the Center for Public Environmental Oversight, serves as a liaison with federal and state governments shaping policy and guidelines in communities polluted with trichloroethylene - a toxic and carcinogenic solvent that was commonly used by industry and the military in the Cold War era.

Siegel, from the Silicon Valley area of California, characterized the former IBM site in Endicott as the “poster-child” for TCE pollution, and cleanup efforts by IBM and the state Department of Environmental Conservation have been a “model for the country.”
