Topock cleanup outlined By JENNIFER DENEVAN Mohave Daily News (CA) May 28, 2015NEEDLES - A recent meeting on the subsequent environmental impact report related to the groundwater cleanup project at the Topock Compressor Station didn’t garner much public input, but there are still opportunities to submit comments. ...The cleanup project stems from Pacific Gas and Electric’s use of hexavalent chromium as a means of protecting equipment while cooling compressed gas. The discarded chromium seeped into groundwater, creating an underground plume. PG&E self-reported the need to clean up the plume and has since worked with the lead agency, DTSC, to determine a remedy. The company chose to use ethanol that helps create a natural filtering system in which a bacteria occurs. That bacteria creates an anaerobic zone that changes the hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium, a nontoxic, insoluable form of chromium. ...New information included finding out PG&E will be using Arizona water that has slightly higher levels of arsenic than is allowed in California, Yue said. The DTSC will evaluate the use of that water. ...
