Save-A-Lot site another redeveloped Rockford brownfield By Brian Leaf Rockford Register Star (IL) July 14. 2015 ROCKFORD - Greens will soon spring from a brownfield on West State Street. When Save-A-Lot opens Aug. 27 at West State and Central Avenue, it will not only bring produce and other groceries to a food desert; it also will mark completion of the successful recycling of a property that, because of pollution concerns, was not able to be developed until deemed clean. Robert Wilhelmi, neighborhood standards supervisor for the city of Rockford, explained that brownfields are former industrial or factory sites where future use is affected by real or perceived soil and groundwater pollution. Pollution concerns at the Save-A-Lot site centered on land once occupied by two corner gas stations.
